Your music has a sound. But does it have a color?

Prince had purple. The White Stripes had red, white, and black. Billie Eilish had neon green and black.

Color helps build the world around your music. It gives fans something to recognize before they hear a song or read your name. Over time, that familiarity becomes another way to feel connected to you.

It also gives you a starting point for visual storytelling. From album artwork and photos to videos, stage lighting, and merch.

That’s the power of owning a color.

Charlie rocket, Grammy Winning music manager, says that in order to build a superfan community you must own a color.

When Bon Iver prepared for his latest release SABLE, fABLE, he found a very specific and intentionally chosen color could speak the language his music embodied:

“I’ve always thought about how, underneath our skin, no matter what the pigment is, it’s this kind of salmon-belly color when it gets cut open,” Vernon said in a statement. “I’ve always thought about the humanity of it… SABLE is darkness—and the choice to go into the darkness. It’s solitary. It’s pressing the bruise. It’s self-martyrdom and sadness. fABLErepresents a new me, with new flesh for a new healthy, happy person.”

Three ways to start today

1. Choose a color that feels like your music. Think about the mood of your songs, not just your favorite color. What shade belongs in the world you’re creating? What emotion do you feel when you hear your music?

2. Repeat it across your visuals. Bring it into your artwork, website, social posts, and merch so each piece feels connected.

3. Explore it through storytelling. Use the color in a location, an outfit, a prop, or the lighting for your next shoot. It doesn’t need to cover everything to become recognizable.

The goal isn’t to make everything match. It’s to make everything feel like you.
