Dear Artists, Many years ago, in my late twenties, I stood in front of a large chalkboard in an old apartment in Ithaca, New York and found something in myself I didn’t know was there. I had chalk in my hand and asked my husband a simple question: What are your biggest dreams and goals for your music? As he answered, I wrote each dream inside its own rectangle along the bottom of the board. At the top, I wrote where he was at the time in his music career. Then I began working from the bottom of the board upward, jotting down every possible way he might get from where he was to where he wanted to go. Some ideas were good. Some were terrible. Some were practical. Together they began to make a map. I didn’t know the term artist development then. I only knew that I could see the distance between where an artist was and where they hoped to go and that I loved helping them imagine the creative, practical, and human steps that could connect those two places. After that day, I reached out to two artist friends whose work I believed in and asked if I could help them build their artist careers, at no charge, simply because I wanted to learn more about this thing that had surprised me. Years later, I still return to that chalkboard. Every artist is standing somewhere between a present reality and a hoped-for future. The questions may be different now: How do I make this music feel like part of a recognizable world? How do I know which idea is worth pursuing? How do I build an audience without losing myself? How do I make more money from the work I am already creating? How do I release music, make content, play shows, sell merch, and still protect the work itself? How do I stop feeling like I’m doing all of this alone?
But the starting point is the same: Where are you now? Where do you want to go? What needs to happen in between?
That is the heart of Freda Artist Development. It’s not about forcing artists into an industry formula. It’s about helping you see the work more clearly, build an artist world that feels true to the music, identify practical ways to create momentum and income, and make the next right decisions with intention.
